VentureClass: Strategic renewal in a social value perspective

February 25, 2016 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Academy Building, Geertsema lecture room
Broerstraat 5, 9712 CP Groningen

With pleasure we announce the first VentureClass of the year on Thursday evening February 25. For this VentureClass we invited two speakers: Jan Tichelaar, former CEO “Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum”, the oldest Dutch company and worldwide famous for their “Makkumer Aardewerk”, and Steve Walsh, professor Entrepreneurial Renewal of Industry, University of Twente, University of New Mexico. We warmly invite you for this event.

Strategic renewal is a corporate entrepreneurial process aiming at significant change of the business of an existing company. Jan Tichelaar will present the case of the evening. As the 12th generation, he was recently CEO of the firm Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum (1572). During his period as CEO Tichelaar renewed the company, to ensure its long term sustainability. He approached it from a broad value perspective. Values as social, economic, cultural and historical, and family values. Tichelaar will explain why and how the strategic renewal was realized and will share his view on the corporate sustainable approach of strategy of the firm.

Steve Walsh will introduce the concept of social entrepreneurship, its role in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and will discuss the strategic renewal of the value creation process of entrepreneurship from this perspective.

These two introductions will be the basis for a discussion on the role of values in entrepreneurship, and a debate on the neo-liberal Anglo-American view on markets versus the Rheinland model as exemplified in many family firms such as Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum.
