Innofest was founded in 2016 with the aim to bring together startups and established companies developing novel solutions for current challenges of the society, such as energy and waste management. These solutions would first be piloted at festivals – natural test facilities providing complex and challenging yet controlled spaces. If a solution or prototype works at a festival, it could be scaled up to the real world, as a festival can be seen as a miniature of a society with real navigation and human behavior, but smaller scale and fenced-off terrain.
Eight festivals in Northern Netherlands have already opened their terrains as living labs: Into The Great Wide Open, Welcome To The Village, Eurosonic, Noorderslag, Oerol, TT Festival Assen, Noorderzon, FestiValderAa and Paradigm Festival.
